Before the Rideau Canal became one of Canada’s most treasured waterways, it began in 1826 as an ambitious engineering project to strengthen the defence of British North America following the War of 1812.

Prepared by Lieutenant-Colonel John By, this remarkable 1829 plan follows the canal from the Ottawa River to Kingston, tracing its route through the rivers, lakes and communities of Eastern Ontario. Rich with hand-coloured waterways, meticulous notes and surveying detail, it is as captivating to explore today as it was nearly two centuries ago.

Beautifully reproduced from a high-resolution archival scan, this Heritage Prints edition preserves the character and extraordinary detail of the original document, inviting you to discover the vision that helped shape the Rideau Canal, Bytown and, eventually, Canada’s capital.
