J.E.H. MacDonald’s Falls, Montreal River (1920) captures the wild beauty of Ontario’s Algoma country in a blaze of autumn colour. Water rushes through the rocky foreground while brilliant hills rise beyond, transforming the Canadian landscape into one of MacDonald’s powerful visions of colour, movement and place.

J.E.H. MacDonald (1873–1932) was a founding member of the Group of Seven and one of the defining figures in the development of Canadian landscape painting. He travelled through Algoma with fellow artists in the years preceding the formation of the Group of Seven, sketching directly from the northern landscape. Falls, Montreal River grew from that experience and became a large finished canvas measuring approximately 60¼ × 48 inches.
