Created in 1964, Canada’s Maple Leaf Tartan emerged from an especially optimistic moment in Canadian design — the years leading up to the Centennial and Expo 67. Its deep greens, reds, warm golds and browns were inspired by the changing colours of the maple leaf through the seasons.
Our Maple Leaf Tartan blanket brings that distinctive Canadian pattern into the home as a substantial 100% cotton woven throw, finished with colourful fringed edges. Rather than being surface-printed, the design is interpreted through woven threads, giving the tartan a wonderfully soft, textured and slightly muted character — more heirloom textile than digital print.
Drape it across the back of a sofa, at the foot of a bed or over your favourite reading chair — or simply pull it around you when the weather turns cool.
A Canadian design from the 1960s
The Maple Leaf Tartan was designed in 1964 by David Weiser, then vice-president of Toronto-based Highland Queen Sportswear, in anticipation of Canada’s Centennial celebrations in 1967.
Weiser developed the design from a red-and-green plaid already produced by the company, adding gold, light brown and dark brown to create a tartan with a distinctly Canadian identity.
It arrived during a lively period for tartan and plaid in Canadian fashion. As the country prepared for its Centennial and Expo 67, Canadian tartans appeared on clothing and accessories, and Weiser’s Maple Leaf Tartan was marketed as contemporary fashion rather than simply ceremonial cloth.
Maple Leaf Tartan garments were sold at Expo 67 in Montréal, where visitors could purchase tartan goods on the exhibition grounds.
In 2011, the Maple Leaf Tartan was formally declared an official national symbol of Canada.
Colours of the Canadian seasons
The tartan’s palette was chosen to evoke the maple leaf as the Canadian seasons change:
- Green — the maple leaf in summer
- Gold — the beginning of autumn
- Red — the colour brought by the first frost
- Brown — fallen leaves approaching winter
Together, the colours give the Maple Leaf Tartan its unmistakably warm, autumnal character — and a palette that has remained distinctively Canadian since the 1960s.
Woven, not simply printed
This blanket is made from 100% cotton yarn. The Maple Leaf Tartan design is translated into the woven structure of the blanket rather than simply printed onto its surface.
The weaving process naturally softens the colours and creates subtle variations between threads. The result is a warm, textured and slightly muted interpretation of the tartan that feels especially appropriate to a traditional woven textile.
The colourful fringe continues the woven character around the edges and gives the blanket the familiar finish of a classic tartan throw.
Our design is based on the documented Maple Leaf Tartan pattern, preserving its characteristic stripe proportions and arrangement while allowing the woven medium to give the finished blanket its own natural texture and colour.
