MacDonald painted the Montreal River region north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, during the formative period in which he and his fellow artists were developing a distinctly Canadian approach to landscape painting. In Falls, Montreal River, rushing water, exposed rock, forest and distant hills are transformed into a richly coloured composition of movement, texture and light.

J.E.H. MacDonald (1873–1932) was a painter, designer, poet and founding member of the Group of Seven, whose bold interpretations of the Canadian landscape helped transform the country’s visual identity in the early twentieth century.

Born in Durham, England, MacDonald came to Canada with his family as a teenager and later established himself in Toronto as a successful commercial artist and designer. His work at the influential design firm Grip Ltd. brought him into contact with several artists who would later become fellow members of the Group of Seven.

MacDonald travelled widely in search of subjects, painting the forests, rivers and rocky country of northern Ontario as well as the mountains of Western Canada. His landscapes are celebrated for their strong design, brilliant colour and deeply felt response to the natural world.

In 1920, MacDonald joined Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, Franklin Carmichael and Frank Johnston in the first exhibition of the Group of Seven. Their work would become one of the most influential movements in Canadian art.
